April 14, 2017

With the warmer temperatures comes the urge to begin Spring activities. Although Onondaga Lake and surrounding waterways are ice free, there are still many dangers to be cautious of. Aside from the extremely high water levels, there is quite a bit of debris floating at both the surface and directly under the surface. Use extreme caution, travel slow, and don't enter any areas that you may be unfamiliar with. Water temperatures are still very low and short periods of exposure can cause hypothermia within seconds.

If possible, please let the water levels subside before boating. If you do chose to navigate waterways, be sure to wear PFDs, ensure all safety and USCG required items are available, use EXTREME CAUTION, and reduce speed (NO WAKE).

The Onondaga County Sheriff's Office has issued a travel advisory for all waterways. See Syracuse.com article below.
